Hong Kong Clean Air Radio Drama 2007

The first hit of the Black Nose Campaign is a radio drama competition, named "Hong Kong Clean Air Radio Drama Competition 2007", which will be held from September to October 2007. This prorgramme intends to raise the awareness among the general public about the impact of air pollution to our daily life and advocate the clean air message in Hong Kong. In this competition, entries will be invited from local secondary schools from September 2007. Winning dramas will be broadcasted in the programme "Fitness for All" ( 健康地球人 ) on Metro Finance Channel (FM104). The first fifty participants can also join a free one-day eco-tour to Long Valley.
The competition was succussfully completed and the results were announced.

Public Forum on Better Air Quality

The Council for Sustainable Development (CSD) is now collecting opinion on a number of issues related to HK's air pollution issues in the latest "Clean Air – Clear Choices" public engagement programme. Hong Kong People’s Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), as a partner organization in the public engagement programme, will organize a discussion forum on 6 October 2007 (Saturday) to you to express your views on these issues. The outcomes from this forum will be submitted to CSD.

To put our initiative into action, Clean Air Charter Monitor and Black Noise Week are the two focal projects which will be commenced in the coming Autumn and Winter.

Urban activism for effective governance: A new civil society campaign in the HKSAR
|
|
Since the Handover, a new brand of civil society activism has begun to brew in the HKSAR. In addition to the long-time social and political issues championed by politicians and social workers such as inequality, discrimination and democratic development, the middle class and professionals have joined the fray and become a formidable force in civil society movement, taking the lead in issues such as urban renewal, harbour protection, air pollution, heritage preservation, cultural development and town planning. They participate not as activists per se but as an important stakeholder in society concerned with effective governance of the HKSAR. To them the government’s traditional way of handling civil society is no longer adequate and new rules of engagement have to be developed. This paper examines briefly the civil society movement under this new landscape and discusses the interaction between civil society and government and their options for continual engagement.
