(29th November 2008) Climate change is a serious issue. To combat climate change, the power youth cannot be neglected. To encourage the high school students to share their voices on climate change, the Hong Kong People’s Council for Sustainable Development (“PCSD”) organizes the 2nd Annual Radio Drama Competition on Sustainable Development, with Climate Change as the theme. This program aims to encourage the students to learn about climate change through producing radio dramas with any sub-topics, e.g. saving energy, renewable energy, low-carbon lifestyle and Kyoto Protocol. This competition is open to all high schools in Hong Kong, including all international schools. The winning dramas will be broadcasted on the radio (English dramas on RTHK Radio 3). In order to help the students understand climate change issues, PCSD has organized an educational “Climate Change” workshop cum Opening Ceremony. Mr. Chong Chan Yau (莊陳有先生), Vice-chairman of PCSD said, “Although climate change seems far away, we can help to combat this problem by making changes in our daily habits.” During the workshop, PCSD has invited Mr. Lam Chiu-ying (林超英先生), Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, who said, “As an international city, Hong Kong should exercise its global citizenship, be responsible of our high consumption lifestyle and take action to stop the problem from worsening.” Dr. Rebecca Lee (李樂詩博士), Polar Researcher and Founder of Polar Museum Foundation, shared the stories about the polar bears, which will soon die from famine due to separation from their homes as a result of ice-melting. Mr. Stephen Chan, General Manager of TVB Broadcasting Ltd., shared his inspiration from the recent trip to visit the melting glaciers in the Arctic circle. He said, “Everybody should be aware of the climate change issue, because what climate change will lead to is a global disaster. We might not have to discuss any plans for the year 2050, as the humans might become extinct by then!” |
